Duffy The Disney Bear and his colorful friends are a phenomenon at international Disney theme parks, yet you wouldnât know it based on their lack of popularity here in the U.S. But something has shifted in the last few years: U.S. fans are growing more interested in Duffy, and Disney seems to have noticed. With a planned Disney Plus show, rumored appearance on the new Mickey Mouse Clubhouse 2.0, planned events and shows in the Disney Cruise Line, and a confirmed feature as part of a cavalcade for the Disneyland Resortâs 70th Anniversary Celebration, Duffy and Friends are descending upon the American Disney theme parks. So, who is Duffy the Disney Bear? (Updated April 2025.)
Duffy the Disney Bear, Explained
Duffy the Disney Bear is Mickey Mouseâs bear who first appeared in 2002 as part of the opening of the âOnce Upon a Toyâ store in Walt Disney World. In 2004, Duffyâthen known only as âThe Disney Bearââwas made available for sale at Aunt Pegâs Village Store in American Waterfront (American Waterfront is a land within Tokyo DisneySea, the second, very popular theme park at Tokyo Disneyland). American Waterfront flows with DisneySeaâs nautical theme, and it is themed to 1900s New York City and Cape Cod. Between 2005 and 2008, Duffy could only be purchased at Aunt Pegâs Village Store.
Does Duffy Have a Backstory?
Of course! Disney Imagineers created a story for Duffy to align with his move to American Waterfront at Tokyo DisneySea. According to the Imagineers:
ââŚwhen Mickey Mouse the sailor, based in Cape Cod, was leaving on a long sea voyage, Minnie Mouse made Duffy to keep Mickey company during his travels. Minnie presented her hand-sewn bear to Mickey in a duffel bag, which is how Mickey came up with the name Duffy.â
Duffy is known to make his friends smile, and due to his innocence, remind people of their childhoodâof their âinner Duffy.â Duffyâs personality has grown along with his story, and itâs that personality that seems to have connected with so many fans. Tokyo Disney fans quickly embraced Duffy as a their companion for their park visits, so much so that Duffy is basically an icon at that, and other international parks.
Where Can You Find Duffy at the Disney Parks?
Duffy can be seen at Tokyo Disney Resort, Shanghai Disney Resort, Hong Kong Disneyland, and Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa, in Hawaiâiâand soon, Disneyland in Anaheim, California!
Who are Duffyâs Friends?
Duffyâs friend group has grown along with his story to much success. Duffy and Friends appear in shows, parades, and Character Experiences at international Disney theme parks and resorts. Their popularity has grown along with Duffyâs, creating a Duffy-verse of sorts (the DCU? Iâll stop). Each of Duffyâs friends have a unique story about how they met Mickey Mouse and Duffy, and a unique personality to match.
ShellieMay
ShellieMay is Duffyâs best friend. She debuted at Tokyo Disney several years after Duffy, and then started appearing at Aulani in August of 2014. The story goes that ShellieMay was also created by Minnie Mouse and stuffed with joy so Duffy could have a best friend.
Gelatoni
Gelatoni, a green cat, described as a âcool cat with a passion for painting,â premiered at Shanghai Disneyland in 2017. GGelatoni met Duffy and Mickey Mouse at the Palazzo Canals in Italy, where Duffy spilled his gelatto; Gelatoni used the spilled gelato to paint a work of art for Duffy.
StellaLou
StellaLou is a lavender rabbit who premiered at Tokyo Disney in 2017. She met Duffy in front of the S. S. Columbia at America Waterfront where she shared her dream of dancing on Broadway. StellaLou is known for not giving up easy, and her hard work towards her dancing dreams inspires her friends.
CookieAnn
CookieAnnâoriginally named Cookieâis a yellow dog who loves to cook. She is known for being inventive, and her ability combine things both in and out of the kitchen. Cookie premiered at Hong Kong Disneyland in 2018, and in this cute video, she was renamed CookieAnn in 2019 to match her friends with two names. In 2021, Disney CookieAnn Bakery Cafe, a bakery owned by Minnie Mouse, opened on Mickey Avenue at Shanghai Disneyland.
âOlu Mel
âOlu Mel (short for âmelodyâ) is a ukelele-playing turtle who premiered at Aulaniânoticeably not a theme park but a Disney resortâin July of 2018. According to his backstory, âOlu Mel was discovered by Mickey and Duffy when they were sailing to islands to find a birthday present for ShellieMay. Mickey and Duffy followed the sounds of a âukulele to find âOlu Mel in a cove. Described as musical and light-hearted, when âOlu Mel plays his music, it makes his friends feel happy. âOlu Mel began greeting guests in person at Aulani in 2021. While he doesnât appear in-person, he does have a presence at Disneyâs Hilton Head Island Resortâhere is my ultimate guide to that resort.
LinaBell
LinaBell, the newest friend of Duffy, is a fox with an inquisitive mind known to solve problems. First introduced to Shanghai Disneyland in 2021, LinaBell met Duffy in the forest when he got lost following a butterfly. LinaBell used her handy magnifying glass to examine clues on Duffyâs body, which led her reuniting Duffy with Mickey Mouse. LinaBell has since appeared at Tokyo DisneySea and Hong Kong Disneyland. You can also stay in a LinaBell-themed room at the Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel.
Can You Find Duffy at Walt Disney World or Disneyland?
Not regularly.
Walt Disney World
A Duffy regular character experience previously took place at the World Showcase at EPCOT until 2015. But, things seem to be slowly changing, and Duffyâs costume must be hanging somewhere nearby in an Orlando closet. Duffy recently appeared for a character experience at EPCOT for a Moonlight Magic after hours event. (These infrequent events are limited to Disney Vacation Club members.)
Duffy was later brought out to assuage attendees at Jollywood Nightsâthe relatively new holiday after hours part at Hollywood Studiosâafter what appeared to be a disastrous opening night. (I wasnât there, so we will have to take the bloggersâ word for it.)
Duffy returned for Disneyâs Jollywood Nights in 2024, and I was able to meet him (see above). The line was pretty long, but it was worth it. Duffy was at Itâs A Wonderful Shop on Grand Avenue. We know that land is being closed for the upcoming Monsterâs Inc.-themed expansion at Hollywood Studiosâsubscribe to my newsletter for more details about that and where Duffy will be this upcoming holiday season.
Disneyland
Duffy used to appear at Disney California Adventure (the second park at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim). At another Moonlight Magic event earlier this year (2025) at Disney California Adventure, Duffy came back, along with Shellie Mae, and Olu Mel, to guestsâ surprise. This was the first appearance at a theme park in the U.S. for both ShellieMae AND Olu Melâthis is a very big deal
As mentioned above, Disneyland is celebrating 70 years starting this May. A new character cavalcade called âThe Celebrate Happy Cavalcadeâ is coming to Disneyland, and will include Duffy and ShellieMay. This is a big push at Disneyland itself for a big celebrationâI am eager to see how this impactâs Duffy and Friendsâ popularity.
What About Duffy Merch?
According to an answer to a PlanDisney question about where to find Duffy, Duffy is not currently available at any merchandise locations within the Walt Disney World Resort. The PlanDisney answer also indicated that Duffy is not available for purchase online at ShopDisney either. Though Duffy and a few of his friends have been sold at the parks (and Disney Springs) before, Disney stopped such sales in 2015.
However, in 2020 Duffy and some of his friends were placed on sale at Disneyâs Polynesian Resort (to learn more about the Polynesian, read my article, Disneyâs Polynesian Resort Review and Tips for Parents). Duffy, ShellieMay, and Gelatoni are available as small plush keychains, on shirts, and various other smaller items. The focus is on âOlu Mel, and there are a wider assortment of options for him.
Why is Duffy Less Popular in the U.S.?
Itâs hard to pinpoint what really happened with the Duffy rollout in the early aughts. He clearly made an impact to some fans, but possibly less fans than Disney anticipated. One theory is that Duffy was not tethered to any known Disney film, show, of other intellectual property. Without that familiarity or built-in fanbase, Duffyâs arrival may have been met with confusion. People may have considered a new teddy bear to be the last thing on their souvenir list, especially considering the popularity of the Sensational Six.
Another reason could be Disneyâs decision not to introduce Duffy with an interesting backstory. For some reason Disney elected to fully flesh out a story for Duffy at Tokyo Disneyland instead, and that was clearly a success. Maybe fans simply didnât understand why Disney was promoting a teddy bear at its theme parks normally associated with institutional characters.
Whatâs Next for Duffy and Friends?
Stateside dominance, it seems.
D23 Events
Things went into motion in 2022 when Disney hosted at D23 Expo an event called âThe World of Duffy & Friends Revealedâ which basically gave an introduction to all the characters and provided backstory about their creation. At the event, LinaBell appearedâher first and to my knowledge, only stateside appearance. Also, perhaps most exciting, a six-episode stop-motion animated show was announced, to premiere on Disney Plus. The episodes were to be like the web shorts, which feature no dialogue (because the characters donât speak at the parks at meet and greets), already available on the Disney YouTube channel. The thing is, they never arrived, and there is no more information out there explaining why they have yet to come to fruition or if they are still in development.
This year, on May 3, another Duffy-themed event is being held at Disneyâs Glendale Creative Campus (pretty cool) to celebrate 20 years of Duffy and Friends. The event sold out pretty quickâa good sign.
Mickey Mouse Clubhouse 2.0
Perhaps more interesting, in 2023, Disney announced that Mickey Mouse Clubhouse would return in 2024. Other parents can understand how important this is, and note the difference between Clubhouse and Funhouse. Anyway, at a Disney Junior & Friends play date event at Disney California Adventure, when announcing future childrenâs programming, it was Mickey Mouse Clubhouse 2.0 (which was the working title at the time) that got the most buzz, but what sort of slipped under the radar is that Duffy the Disney Bear himself would be joining the cast. Thatâs right, Duffy on an updated version of a beloved show, reportedly coming this year. We donât yet know the extent of Duffyâs involvement or how he will be featuredâitâs kind of funny thinking of him like a major guest star appearing with a âfeaturing Duffy the Disney Bearâ creditâbut it is exciting nonetheless, assuming it is still happening. And what better way to prepare the next generation for Duffy and his friends than through Disney Plus? I think people call that synergy.Â
Disney Cruise Line
Finally, a big update for Duffy and friends at sea, and specifically, the Disney Cruise Line, shows further expansion of the Duffy universe. The Disney Adventure, the upcoming eighth Disney Cruise Line ship that is planned to begin service December 15 of this year, will be the first Disney Cruise ship to be based in Singapore. The ship will feature seven themed areas, including Imagination Garden, a whimsical hub for the ship with a theatrical stage, dining options, garden view staterooms, and experiences and theming associated with classical Disney stories.
Imagination Garden will also feature Duffy and Friends in their cruise ship debut, including as part of the Duffy and The Friend Ship (get it?), a stage show that will be a journey of joy and inspiration with original songs and a new character, a seagull named Tippy Blue (my money is on Tippy Blue becoming a sensation). There will also be Duffy and Friends meet and greets, a Duffy and Friends Shop, which I am sure will have exclusive and fun merch, and a Duffy and Friends Discovery Quest scavenger hunt.Â
Concluding Thoughts
That was a lot of information. And thatâs all on top of the exciting Duffy and friends happenings across the international theme parks that could fill up other articlesâlet me know if you are interested in reading about that. Â
Thank to social media, Disney theme are more in a way, more accessible than ever, at least virtually. The popularity of Duffy and Friends likely may be fueled by hype; by fansâ desire to know what others donât know, to have the latest thingâespecially if it is in short supply. For now, Duffy and Friends are simultaneously popular elsewhere yet inaccessible for many Disney fans. Until Disney releases Duffy and Friends in the U.S. Disney theme parks, fan demand will only grow. I am cautiously optimistic about whatâs next, but I will be staying tuned and keeping you updated.
