Disney recently shared the first look at Tron: Ares, the follow up to Tron: Legacy, released in 2010. Here is what we know.
First Image and Video of Tron: Ares
Short answer? Not much! But we can gather some details from context clues. The below image, shared by Disney and Jared Leto on leap day, was accompanied by a glitchy, red-hued video with the text, “#System Ctl Start Ares.”
Production Details for Tron: Ares
Jared Leto—sudden Disney Darling, fresh off a turn as the beloved Hatbox Ghost in last year’s Haunted Mansion retelling (we don’t talk about two things: the 2003, Eddie Murphy-lead Haunted Mansion adaptation, and Bruno)—stars as an artificial intelligence program that ventures into the real world.
Gillian Anderson, Evan Peters, and Greta Lee are tapped to costar. (The latter in a profile for The Cut disclosed that she will be riding a motorcycle in Tron: Ares, so that much we do know.)
Tron: Ares is a win for Tron enthusiasts after a planned sequel to Tron: Legacy, called Tron: Ascension was canned by Disney in 2015. Interestingly, in a piece by Variety, Joseph Kosinski, director of Tron: Legacy, shared details for this intended sequel, which sound similar to the concept for Tron: Ares.
Looking to Towards Tomorrowland
As mentioned before, Disney is all-in on Tron, despite questions about its impact post Tron: Legacy. The 2010 film did well but not massively so, though it’s sleek look and nocturnal soundtrack created by Daft Punk are both getting deserved praise as the years go on. Within the Disney parks, a version of Tron: Lightcycle Run opened at the Magic Kingdom to fanfare last year, providing a much-needed energy boost to Tomorrowland at the Magic Kingdom. (My review of the ride experience can be found here.). I expect the parks to be included in the film’s eventual rollout, and maybe even new food, characters, and merchandise tie-ins.
Looks like we are heading back to The Grid, whether we like it or not. If Daft Punk comes back to soundtrack the film, count me in.
