Disney World’s flagship resort is undergoing another major change as part of the final multi-year enhancement that has included updating resort rooms, and enhancing Victoria & Albert’s (which now has a Michelin star), Citrix’s, Narcoosee’s, and 1900 Park Fare). In an interesting move, a new bar is coming to the lobby of Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. Let’s discuss.
About the New Bar
A new bar, inspired by the lobby’s iconic birdcage, will feature intricate woodwork, stained glass, and brass accents. An atrium will feature stained glass filled with colorful birds. Don’t fret: the Victorian cage-style elevator that fans know and love will remain intact.
Other Lobby Changes
Disney Imagineers will be updating the surrounding lobby, staircase and front desk with botanical accents and inviting colors to create an airy, garden-like atmosphere.
In keeping with the Gran Flo’s theme, new Victorian-inspired careering will feature, and updated furnishings will blend rich finishes and brass accents with cozy, welcoming fabrics–plus a few playful touches inspired by Florida’s natural beauty and Victorian decorating trends.
The Impact on the Grand Floridian Gingerbread House
Due to planned obstruction of the new bar, the iconic Grand Floridian Gingerbread House will be canceled for the 2025 holiday season. This is a major draw for guests during Christmastime, and a holiday tradition for many Disney goers. Disney has confirmed that other resort gingerbread houses will be open, including at The Contemporary Resort, the Beach Club, and the BoardWalk (see my guide to the BoardWalk resort).
My Thoughts
I will be frank: I am not fully on board with this change at the time. Don’t get me wrong, the enhancements to the decor look nice, and I appreciate other updates the resort has received during the ongoing refurbishment. But, a bar…in the middle of a very busy lobby…where families gather? It seems misplaced.
I understand the Grand Floridian is a popular resort and perhaps this will take the heat off of other dining options. But the Enchanted Lounge is upstairs, offering small bites and a bar, away from the crowds. It feels almost like the Grand Floridian lobby will turn into a cruise ship of sorts, allowing drinking in such an open space where families mix. I am not sure this is the right move, and yes, I understand people can drink in most places around Disney World, and the family-friendly atmosphere remains intact. I just don’t know how this will impact the vibe of the lobby.
And this will only make the already crowded space feel smaller. Add in the gingerbread house in future years and the lobby is going to feel like Mardi Gras during the holidays. I remain cautiously optimistic.
